Innovating in HR and leadership development

Posted on by from Changeboard

His Excellency Abdulla Al Saleh, undersecretary for foreign trade and industry, Ministry of Economy UAE, discusses the future of leadership in the region.

What is the key for leadership development in public organisations?

Leadership is vital to the public sector because of its positive impact on job performance and employee satisfaction and because it dictates the effectiveness of government and public agencies.

Leaders should exert maximum effort to understand employees and determine how best to support and motivate them. They should commit to managing change and honing participative management skills by proactively involving others in decision making. They should gain a clear grasp of obstacles to individual and organisational success and formulate solutions.

The younger generation should be educated about how active participation in governance enables them to solve their own problems, satisfy their needs and manage their lives, while making a difference in society. Working towards youth-friendly policies and positions is a good investment.

How can skills gaps be solved?

A balance between theoretical and practical professional development is essential. The focus should be on intensifying public workforce investment across training, funding, career development, benchmarking and incentivising. Training programmes should be on par with global standards and more accessible to employees.

Consider the support of international experts and partner at the local and federal levels to access development resources.

How is the role of HR changing in government organisations?

Given its people-facing nature, the public service sector needs people with the right skills and attitudes who are genuinely inspired to serve.

Public administrations recognise the importance of modernising the public sector to achieve higher levels of flexibility and efficiency, starting with the workforce. The first step in evolving the HR dimension is to treat it as a true strategic partner. By working together, HR and government can execute key organisational changes.
